Every year around the start of August, your feed fills up with talk of a portal. The Lion's Gate portal, the 888 portal, a date circled in gold. And every year the same two camps show up: one promising that the universe is about to hand you everything if you set the right intention, the other rolling its eyes at the whole thing. Both are missing something.
The Lion's Gate portal weaves together real astronomy, a very old tradition, the numerology of eight, and, for those of us who work with energy, a genuinely potent window. Hold those threads with respect and you end up with something useful: a charged, marked day, a good reason to pause, and a practice worth doing. So let's walk through each thread honestly, then put them back together as a ritual you can actually use on 8/8.
What Is the Lion's Gate Portal?
Start with the sky, because there's a real thing happening up there.
Sirius is the brightest star in our night sky, far brighter than any other, and for thousands of years cultures have watched it closely. In ancient Egypt, the annual reappearance of Sirius on the horizon just before sunrise, after weeks of being hidden in the Sun's glare, coincided with the flooding of the Nile that made the whole civilization possible. That heliacal rising was a genuine astronomical event people organized their year around. Sirius mattered.
The Lion's Gate portal takes its name from what's happening now. Through late July and early August, the Sun sits in the astrological sign of Leo, the lion, and Sirius rises alongside it. In astrology, this meeting of the Sun and Sirius during Leo season is read as a kind of doorway, a "gate," where energy is said to run especially high. The lion gives the gate its name. Leo its season.
The window most people use runs July 26 to August 12, and it peaks on August 8, which is where the 8/8 comes from. If you followed along at the opening of the window, we wrote about that beginning and the Cosmic New Year in our companion post on the Lion's Gate opening. This piece is about the peak.
One honest note before we go further. The astronomy is real: Sirius truly does rise with the Sun at this time of year. And in our tradition the energy is real too. This alignment is felt as an open, potent window, and as energy workers we meet it that way rather than explaining it off. Layered on top of both is something anyone can use, whatever they believe: a shared, marked day that people have honored in various forms for a very long time is a powerful container for focused intention. Astronomy, energy, and a gathered moment, all pointing the same direction.
The 8/8 and the Numerology of Eight
The other half of the story is the number itself, and this is where the 888 portal gets its name.
In numerology, eight is the number of abundance, manifestation, and material prosperity. Turn it on its side and it becomes the lemniscate, the infinity symbol, the loop with no beginning and no end. So eight carries two meanings at once: the very grounded idea of material flow and provision, and the very expansive idea of the eternal, the cycle that keeps returning. On 8/8, you get the month and the day both landing on eight, which is why so many people treat this as the strongest intention-setting day of the whole portal.
You'll see 8/8 described as a peak of activation, and many people, our practitioners among them, feel the day as genuinely charged. The number is also a symbol, and symbols carry real power. When you hold eight as abundance and infinite return, and you sit down on 8/8 to focus on what you want to grow, you're working with both the heightened energy of the day and the force of a clear, felt intention. The two reinforce each other, and that's exactly what makes the day worth marking.
The word manifestation is often flattened to wanting something hard enough until it appears. As we practice it, it's a pairing: getting genuinely clear about what you want, and working with your energy so you become open and aligned to receive it. The clarity sets the direction, the energy opens the channel, and together they're what have you noticing the doors, saying the yeses, and taking the small consistent steps. Eight is a fitting symbol to hold both.
Why Leo, the Heart, and Receiving Belong Together
Here's what makes 8/8 more than a wish-list exercise, and it comes straight from the tradition itself.
Leo, in astrology, rules the heart. So the Lion's Gate portal isn't only about abundance in the material sense. It's about opening the heart, about courage, warmth, generosity, and the willingness to be seen. That reframes the whole ritual. You're not just naming what you want to receive. You're softening the part of you that decides whether you're allowed to receive it at all.
Most people are far better at giving than receiving. We say yes to others and no to ourselves, we deflect the compliment, we feel a flicker of guilt when good things arrive. A manifestation ritual that skips the heart tends to bounce off exactly there. This is why we build the 8/8 practice below around three moves, not one: setting a clear intention, opening the heart so you can actually receive, and getting quiet enough to hear what you already know.
A Grounded 8/8 Lion's Gate Ritual
You don't need anything elaborate. Twenty to thirty minutes, a quiet room, and a little intention. Do it any time on August 8 that you can carry stillness into. Morning is traditional, but the day is the day, not the hour.
1. Set the space
Turn your phone over or leave it in another room. Light a candle if you have one. Sit somewhere you can keep your spine long and your feet on the floor. Take three slow breaths, longer on the exhale than the inhale, until you feel yourself actually arrive. This first minute isn't decoration. It's the part that tells your nervous system nothing is chasing you, which is the only state in which reflection lands.
2. Open the heart
Because Leo rules the heart, start here rather than at the wish list.
Bring a hand to the center of your chest. Roll a heart-opening scent over your pulse points, the wrists and the sternum, and let the smell reach you before you do anything else. We reach for The Love Alchemist for this, our Heart Chakra blend of rose and bergamot in an organic castor oil base with a smooth stainless steel roller ball, each batch Energy Healed with Karuna Reiki and Reiki by Dr. Mansi Vira. Rose for the tenderness, bergamot for the lift. Breathe it in and ask yourself one question: what would I let in, if I believed I was allowed to? Don't answer with your head. Just let the honest thing surface.
3. Name the intention
Now the manifestation part, and here's where being grounded pays off.
Write down what you want to grow in this next cycle. Money, yes, if that's true for you, but also the less spreadsheet-able things: steadier work, a warmer home, a creative project that's been waiting, a relationship that feels like ease. Write it in the present, as though it's already becoming true, and keep it just at the edge of believable. "I am open to more abundance and I'm taking real steps toward it" will do far more for you than "I am a millionaire," because your body can say yes, maybe to the first and calls the second a lie. The affirmations that change anything are the ones you can almost feel. On 8/8, with eight everywhere you look, let the number hold the expansive part while your words stay true.
If solar plexus is where your work lives this season, the seat of confidence, personal power, and the will to actually do the thing, The Power Source blends lemon and ginger for exactly that fire. Roll it just below the ribs as you write.
4. Receive and listen
This is the step everyone rushes, and it's the one that matters most.
Set the pen down. Close your eyes. Instead of pushing your intention outward like a demand, let it sit, and get quiet enough to notice what comes back. Sometimes it's a next step you'd been avoiding. Sometimes it's a feeling. Sometimes it's nothing, and nothing is fine. To support that inward turn we like The Cosmic Intuitive, our Third Eye blend of frankincense and lavender, rolled at the brow and the back of the neck. Frankincense to steady the mind, lavender to quiet it. Many describe 8/8 as a day when insight comes more easily, and in our experience these open windows really do make it easier to hear yourself. Let whatever surfaces be enough.
5. Anchor it and carry it
Close by reading your intention out loud once. Hearing your own voice make the claim does something silent reading can't.
Then carry the day with you. Slip on a bracelet so the intention travels past the ritual and into the rest of the day. The Bracelet of Connection pairs amethyst and fluorite, two stones many people reach for when they want clarity and calm, and you can add a drop of your roller oil to the lava stone so the scent comes back every time you catch it. If you want to fold in a lunar rhythm too, our note on charging your crystals under the full moon pairs naturally with setting stones out on a charged day like 8/8.
Dr. Mansi's take: The people who get the most from a day like this work with its energy and then move with it. Name what you want clearly, open your heart enough to receive it, channel the day's charge toward it, then get up and take the smallest real step the same week. The portal marks the moment and lends its energy. You do the walking.
Holding It Honestly
A few things worth saying plainly, because we'd rather you trust us than be sold to.
A charged day like 8/8 opens the space and sharpens the energy, and it still asks you to show up. No scent, stone, or affirmation is a shortcut around the ordinary work of building a life you want. What a marked day like this does beautifully is give you a potent, shared moment to stop, get clear, choose, and turn your energy toward what you're calling in. That, repeated and acted on, is where real change actually comes from. The ritual is a container for it, not a substitute.
